Music runs in the family — Rahman's father, the late RK Shekhar, was a composer and conductor in the Malayalam film industry, who delivered memorable melodies in his time.

"Though Shekhar died when Rahman was a young boy, he always nurtured Rahman's interest in music. He learned a lot from his father," says M Haricharan Das of Musee Musicals, a 167-year-old music store in Chennai, which the father-son duo used to visit often to check out the latest instruments. Rahman even studied music for five years at Musee Musicals and took his Trinity College of Music exams there.

But with the premature death of his father, a young Rahman had to shoulder responsibilities: his family began renting out his father's musical instruments to make ends meet while he struggled to establish himself, dividing his time between music lessons and rock bands.

He first made his mark in the world of advertising, making memorable jingles for Leo Coffee and Titan. The big break famously came when Mani Ratnam, until then an Ilayaraja loyalist, offered him 'Roja' in 1991. "Rahman was always way ahead of his time and very interested in technology," says Sharada Trilok who, with husband Trilok, introduced Rahman to Mani Ratnam. "We kept telling Mani Ratnam that he simply had to meet Rahman, that he would be floored by his music," she says. 'Roja' won Rahman a national award, and there was no looking back.

He is the first Indian musician to win the Golden Globe and the BAFTA award. At the Oscars, Rahman has won three nominations ^ for Best Original Score and two for Best Original Song for 'Jai ho' and 'O Saya'.
